TELLICO PLAINS SCENERY

These two photos were taken a few months ago while I was wandering around Tellico Plains. The photo of the signage was taken at the back of the old train depot, while the other is a photograph of the actual depot itself. The depot is located off the town square in Tellico Plains, next door to Biereley-Hale Funeral Home. The train rails are no longer in place. They were removed several years ago. The tack ran along the right side of the depot, which is the view seen in the photograph. The signage is barely visible at the back of the building (to the far left in the photograph of the building). One might notice that the sign appears to have been used for target practice as it is full of holes. The old depot is now occupied by the Farmers Co-op.

This building reminds me of the story Van Larry Self told me about growing up in Tellico Plains and leaving the area to find good work (good pay). He said there were no good paying jobs around Tellico Plains in those days. He hopped a train in 1937, becoming a ho-bo, and went to Waukegan, Illinois to find work. He ended up staying there until he retired over 40 years later. Van now lives in Pontotoc, Mississippi.
