MEMORIAL SERVICE TO HONOR JOHN J. SELF SET FOR MARCH 13, 2010

Dear Self family member…

You are cordially invited to participate in a Memorial Service honoring our ancestors, John J. and Lydia Avaline Waters Self. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Giles-Roberts Cemetery at Rafter, in Tellico Plains, Monroe County, Tennessee. The service will begin at the cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
John J. Self died March 5, 1910. This memorial service will commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death. (I was hoping to have the service on March 6th, but circumstances necessitate it to be later.)

Those who wish to travel together to the cemetery should meet either at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, 4650 Hwy. 411 Bypass, in Madisonville, by 10:00 a.m. or at the Hardees Restaurant in Tellico Plains, located at 127 Bank Street, Tellico Plains (which is on the left of Hwy. 68 as you get into Tellico Plains), no later than 10:30 a.m. We will leave Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville at 10:00 a.m. and stop briefly to pick up anyone waiting at Hardees in Tellico Plains at 10:30 a.m. We will arrive at the cemetery just before 11:00 a.m. The service will be fairly brief. Time will also be spent looking at the graves of other relatives. Please bring a lawn chair if you will need seating and an umbrella, since we will have the service regardless of the weather (rain or shine). If it rains a lot, we may gather at a local church. We will cancel if it should snow. It will then be held on March 27. Please call to confirm before driving a long distance to attend.
We may return to Tellico Plains following the memorial service and stop at a restaurant in town for lunch if there is enough interest among those who attend.

Directions to the cemetery are provided in case anyone would rather meet us there. Take the Cherohala Skyway off Hwy. 68 in Tellico Plains and go toward the mountains. Turn left onto Hwy. 360 and cross the Tellico River bridge, just out of town. Turn right at the gas station just after crossing the river bridge. This is the road to Rafter. Travel approximately 9 miles. You will come to the Rafter Fire Hall and Community Center. Turn right at the fire hall. The drive into the cemetery is the first road to the left. It is a short road and there is limited parking. Some of us may have to park at the fire hall and walk the short distance to the cemetery. It is not a long walk.

Please R.S.V.P. by March 5, 2010 to let me know if you are planning to attend the memorial service. You may call to Ph. 423-420-9253 or e-mail me at biereleyhalefh@compfxnet.com

I look forward to seeing you Saturday, March 13, 2010.

THIS OLD HOUSE

This old house was built around 1828 to 1832. It is the home of Tommy and (Cousin) Mildred Miller Thomas, of Madisonville, TN. The house is located approximately 1 mile out of Madisonville on Hwy. 68 North. Tommy Thomas was born in this house August 19, 1922 and still sleeps in the same bedroom where he was born. His parents died in the home. A Mr. Humphrey had the home built and lived there until his death. Around 1886, Tommy's grandfather bought the house from Mr. Humphrey's daughter. The house and farm have been in the Thomas family ever since that time. It is likely the oldest home in Monroe County.

44th ANNIVERSARY OF SOLDIER'S DEATH

January 27, 2010 marks the 44th anniversary of the death of Carey Edwin Best, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

CAREY EDWIN BEST was born May 3, 1943 and died in Vietnam on January 27, 1966. He was 22 years old. He was the son of Douglas and Violet Self Best. Carey Best was the second soldier from Monroe County, TN to be killed in Vietnam. It is believed the body of Carey Best was brought by train to the depot in Etowah, Tennessee on February 4, where it was met by the funeral director and transported by hearse to Madisonville. A note on the record of death reads “soldier boy”. The funeral was held on February 6, 1966 at Lee’s Chapel Church. He was buried on February 9, 1966 in Michigan. Douglas and Violet Best were living in Charleston, Michigan at the time Carey died, so they chose to have him buried there. Many years later, the Bests retired and moved back “home” to Tennessee. On May 21, 1998, Carey Edward Best was re-interred at the Big Toqua Cemetery in Vonore, Tennessee in a family plot. I was honored to be a part of that private re-interment service. Also in attendance were the son and daughter of Carey E. Best, his parents and a few invited guests. Rev. Marvin Bud Millsaps offered a prayer at the graveside.

The photo above was published in the newspaper in Monroe County, TN, along with an official death announcement a few days following the soldier’s death. The photo appears here courtesy of Wesley Dillard Self.

Carey Edwin Best was the great-great-grandson of John J. Self. He was a second cousin once removed to James Edward Self, who was also killed in Vietnam on August 22, 1968. Their names are engraved on the Vietnam War Memorial at the Monroe County Courthouse in Madisonville, TN and the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.

2010 SELF FAMILY REUNION DATE AND LOCATION SET

I received a telephone call from Cousin Judy Payne yesterday evening. She has reserved the pavilion at Pearson Springs Park in Maryville, TN for the 2010 Self Family Reunion. The date is Saturday, September 25, 2010. We will have the pavilion reserved from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Restrooms are available at the park. It is located on Montvale Station Road in Maryville and is very close to Sandy Springs Park. More information and complete directions to the park will be added to this site as the date draws near. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for the reunion. Many of you will remember we had to change locations because the fellowship hall at Friendship Baptist Church, where we have met for the past two years, was not going to be available to us this year. Fortunately, Judy already had a new location in mind. Hope to see all of you there!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

My friend in Oregon, Rev. Dale Freeman, said it best in a recent email when he wrote the following...'Well, it's almost time for the "official" celebration of that reality that lives in our hearts every day of the year. Christ, Savior and Lord, was born to die and pay the price for our sin. In Him we find hope, forgiveness and grace. May we, in 2010, give ourselves with wild abandon to "go tell it on the mountain."

I agree with Dale.

Svitlana, Lydia and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May God bless you all and keep you safe during the holiday season.
