SELF FAMILY WINS TELEVISION

Madisonville, TN residents Michael and Susan Self recently won a 42-inch LG television in a drawing held by US Cellular. The contest was tied to this year's Super Bowl and had more than 500 entries in East Tennessee and western North Carolina. Congratulations to Michael and Susan! (Wonder when we will be invited over for popcorn and a movie ?)

COUSINS MOVE WEST

Cousin Kimberly Fowler Wilkerson, her husband Joshua Wilkerson, and their brood of five children moved to Burr, Nebraska in late January. Burr is approximately 30 minutes from Lincoln, NE. Kimberly is the daughter of Jim and Lovonda Cooper Fowler of Vonore, TN.

COUSIN ELISHA COOPER HAS MARRIED

Elisha Cooper was married to Casey Thompson on Saturday, February 2, 2008. The private ceremony took place along the banks of the Tellico River in the Cherokee National Forest, Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Elisha is the son of Ronnie and Mollie White Cooper of Madisonville, TN. Congratulations to these newlyweds!

REV. JOHN AND SHIRLEY BUTLER CELEBRATE 40th ANNIVERSARY

Rev. John Butler and Shirley Cooper Butler, of Madisonville, TN, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Saturday, February 16, 2008. They were married in Monroe County on February 16, 1968. They have four children: Jeff Butler, Sheila Belcher and Patrick Butler. A daughter, Sharon Arlene Butler, is deceased. John is the pastor of Unity Baptist Church in Madisonville.

SELF DESCENDANT, JOHN WILLIAM HENEGAR JR., HAS DIED

John William Henegar, Jr. of Niota, TN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday night, Feb. 13, at Woods Memorial in Etowah. He graduated from McMinn County High School and Cleveland State Community College. He was a former employee of Strom Copper Components of Decatur and Seaton Iron and Metal of Athens. John was avid computer user and expert and enjoyed helping everyone he knew solve their computer problems. He was a Christian and loved the Lord and was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church, in Sweetwater, where he taught Sunday School. John was an exceptionally fine man and will be missed greatly by all of his family members and friends. He was 57. Preceded in death by: father and mother, John William Henegar Sr. and Ada Smith Henegar, both of Niota; and grandparents, James Thomas Smith and Mary Louisa Self Smith, William (Bill) and Callie White Henegar. Survivors include: James (Jim) R. Henegar of Athens; Charles Lee Henegar of Southgate, Mich.; and Grace Henegar Bradford of Falkville, Ala.; Special aunt-Anna Smith Johnson of Niota; Numerous cousins of McMinn County and surrounding counties. The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2008 with the funeral to follow in Kyker’s Chapel with Rev. Ted Watson and Rev. Scott Standridge officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m., Saturday at Niota Cemetery for a 10 a.m. interment. Pallbearers will be Houston Anderson, Michael Anderson, Brad Anderson, J.T. Tallent, Travis Standridge and Jimmy Reed. Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, TN in charge of arrangements.

John was an avid genealogist and he and I worked together on several occasions, trying to gather information on the Self Family. He compiled a book in 2005 on his Smith, Self, Whitmore, and Stonecypher ancestors. He dedicated it to his late mother, Ada Smith Henegar, who was interested in her family history, and his aunts Anna Johnson and Ruth Anderson.

John William Henegar, Jr. was born September 25, 1950. He was the only child of Ada Louisa Smith and John William Henegar. He was the grandson of Mary Self Smith and James Thomas Smith, the great grandson of Rev. Cicero Self and Mosurie Whitmore Self and the great great grandson of John Jones Self and Lydia Avaline Waters Self.

NETTIE BYERS BEAVER HAS DIED

Nettie Arlene Byers Beaver of Hiawassee, Ga., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 in the Union County Nursing Home, Blairsville, Ga. fol­lowing an extended ill­ness. She was born on Jan.9, 1929, in Monroe County, Tennessee the daughter of the late Jack Gaston Byers and the late Dovie Self Byers. She was a loving mother and grand­mother and will be missed by all who knew her. She was of the Baptist faith. She was 79. Preceded in death by a daughter, Annelene Beaver in 1974. Survivors include: Kenneth Beaver of Augusta, Ga., Vernon and Barbara Beaver of Gainesville, Ga., Claude and Maria Beaver of Mesquite, Nev., Evelyn and Randy Hunter of Hiawassee, Ga., Hoyt, Jr. and Sue Beaver of Hayesville, Ga., Doug and Jennifer Beaver of Braselton, Ga.; brother Junior Byers of Madisonville, Tn; sisters Mary Garrett of Etowah, Katie Davis of Coker Creek, Ruby Stanley of Dahlonega, Ga., Alice Roberts of Etowah, Gladys (Dollie) Lynn of Delano; stepsister Nellie Mae Lovingood of Madisonville, Tn; grandchildren Meghan, Brannon, Nate, Cody, Lucas and Brittany Beaver; many other relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services were held at noon, Tuesday Feb. 5, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Harley Hunter officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Steve Kelley and Cody Beaver and other family members. Interment followed in the Burch Cemetery.
