Reverend Carl Jackson Scoggins, 81, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 in a Chattanooga hospital. He was a minister of the Gospel and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church. He attended West Coast Bible College. After being called to preach in the 1950's he traveled to California to start the Bellflower Church of God. He also pastored in Nevada, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. He worked Tennessee youth camps, evangelized and served as a chaplain with the Tennessee prisons. After retiring he enjoyed his prison and radio ministries (WFLI) until his health declined.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence E. Scoggins, Sr. and Roseanna Goins Scoggins; brothers, Don Scoggins, Claude Scoggins, Bobby Scoggins and Clarence "Junior" Scoggins; and son-in-law, Larry Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Reba (Self)Scoggins of Cleveland; children, Theresa Turner of LaFollette, Carla Wright and husband, Steve of Chattanooga, Lynette Mahoney and husband, Thomas of Dunlap, Vonda McMinn and husband, Randy of Charleston; Jackie Scoggins and wife, Tera of Cleveland, April Sullivan and husband, John of Old Fort, Randall Fowler and wife, Brenda of Cleveland and Rick Fowler and wife, Susan of Ooltewah; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brothers, the Reverend Gale Scoggins and wife, Juanita and Dennis Scoggins, all of Cleveland; sisters, Wanda Cavett and husband, Leon of East Ridge and Barbara Knight and husband, H. L. of Cleveland; sisters-in-law, Charlie Mae Scoggins, Iona Scoggins and Syntha Scoggins, all of Cleveland; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Sears and Pastor A.C. Cooper officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pastor David Tuten officiating. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
His family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
