It is primarily for information pertaining to the SELF surname, more particularly for descendants of John J. and Lydia Avaline Waters Self, who were married in Union County, GA in 1851. Barry Self is the SELF proclaimed family genealogist and historian, having spent over 20 years researching this Self line. Linton, Mark A., age 81, of Tellico Plains,Tennessee went to be with the Lord at 8:40 P.M. Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at U.T. Medical Center. Born to the union of Edward O. & Violet Engle Linton in Cleveland, Ohio on January 10, 1931. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War as a high speed Morse code communications specialist. Also held a pilot’s license for single & multi-engine planes, with instrument rating. These skills he later used in civilian life as a pilot and an air traffic controller. A Christian and long time member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker). An Elder, Sunday School teacher & sang baritone in the choir. Served on the Pearl, MS auxiliary Police force, the Rafter Volunteer Fire Dept. and as a ham radio operator for severe weather alerts for Monroe County, TN. As a devoted husband, father, friend & cook, Mark was always thinking of how to help and make the lives of others easier and more enjoyable. Many vacations and memories were shared with family and friends. Survivors, wife of 47 years, Lucile Hunt Linton, Son & daughter-in-law, Steven D. & Linda Wayman, Daughters & sons-in-law, Janice & Dennis Calhoun, Lynette & Mike Atkinson, 11 grandchildren & 23 great-grandchildren, Brother & sisters-in-law, John & Stella Linton, Ellen Harrison, Many nieces, nephews & friends. Preceded in death by parents, son-in-law, Robert Smith, great-granddaughter, Makenzie Wayman. Funeral 2 P.M. Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Friends Meeting of Ballplay Church, Rev. Scott Knight officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends 1-2 P.M. at the church. UNDERWOOD, NEMA SUE, age 60, of Vonore, Tennessee passed away 12:15 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 at home with family after a brief battle with lymphoma. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and Vonore chapter # 383, Order of the Eastern Star. Preceded in death by parents, John “Beece” and Creed Earl Self Kirkland, brother, Earl Kirkland. Survivors: loving husband of 42 years, Roger D. Underwood, Sr.; daughter, Nema Dale Underwood Moses; sons and spouses, Roger “Junior” and Becky Underwood, Donald and LeeAnne Underwood; grandchildren, Autumn Queen and husband Dustin, Sarah Moses, Cory Underwood, Carrie Underwood, Darrin Underwood, Kyli Underwood; sister, Barbara Kirkland Strickland; nieces, Angie Willix, Teresa Crowden, Cindy Kirkland. Funeral 8:00 p.m. Sunday, Biereley-Hale Chapel, Rev. Ronnie Davis, Rev. Chris Holloway, Rev. Charles White officiating. Interment 10:00 a.m. Monday, Vonore Baptist Cemetery. Eastern Star service 7:45 p.m. Sunday. Family will receive friends 6-7:45 p.m. Sunday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, MadisonvilleTN.

Note: Nema Sue was the grandaughter of the late George Washington Self and Vandoria Roberts Self.

Jerry Self, age 64 of Granite Falls, NC, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2012 at his daughters residence in Cherryville, NC. He was a native of Graham County and the son of the late Riley and Zetta Anderson Self. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Adams Self in June of 2004. He is survived by his son, Riley Self of Lenoir, NC; his daughters, Bobbie Wilson of Wilmington, NC, Mary Bever of Tulsa, OK, Martha Pressley of Cherryville, NC, Geraldean Watson of Conover, NC; brothers, Benny Self of Robbinsville, NC, Mark Self of Hildabrand, NC; sisters, Becky Smith, Avis Servert both of Robbinsville, NC, Mavis Cody of Stecoah, NC, Pam Worley of Granite Falls, NC, and Dottie Smith of Pensacola, FL. He has 15 grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 17, 2012 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Reverend Max Turpin will officiate. Burial will follow at the Lower Yellow Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 till 2:00 pm Monday at the Chapel prior to the services.
